New Jersey Devils
newjerseydevils.com (Nov. 5) – Back home looking for their third straight win in Newark, the Devils sputtered to a 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at Prudential Center.

Sidney Crosby scored twice, including once on the power play, and Dany Sabourin made 20 saves for his first career shutout as the Penguins dropped the Devils to 5-7-2.

New Jersey, which registered nine shots over the final 40 minutes of play, has now been blanked four times this season. The club has two wins in its last eight games, and slips to 1-3-2 against the Atlantic Division.

Martin Brodeur (4-7-1) made his sixth straight start, and was relieved by Kevin Weekes 3:28 into the third period after allowing five goals on 24 shots. Weekes stopped all six shots he faced over the remaining 16:32.

Two power plays by the 7:35 mark of the contest could have been just the thing to revive the Devils' offense early. But New Jersey failed to record a shot on either opportunity and finished the night 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Head coach Brent Sutter's group has been held without a goal in its last 12 power play chances dating back to its Oct. 31 meeting with Tampa Bay.

"Our power play isn't producing," Sutter said. "I think we get too cute on it. We don't score enough. I guess tonight has just been a reflection of how our power play has been going."

It would be a while before the Devils got another crack at it. Beginning with David Clarkson's holding the stick call at 11:40 of the first period, New Jersey was whistled for five straight minors, and didn't see another power play until there was 2:21 left in regulation.

With Clarkson in the box for the first of his three penalties, Crosby needed just 29 seconds to make it 1-0 at 12:09 of the first period. Adam Hall staked the Pens to a 2-0 lead by the first intermission.

Petr Sykora and Erik Christensen added goals in the second period for Pittsburgh, which outshot the Devils, 10-3, in the middle frame.

"I'm surprised, there's no other way to put it," Sutter said. "I'm not going to sugarcoat it. Our commitment tonight to being prepared was unacceptable whenever you play. This was a big divisional game, and to come to the rink like that doesn't cut it."

Next up, the division-leading Philadelphia Flyers, who make their first trip to Prudential Center this Thursday, November 8 (7:00 p.m., FSN NY, WFAN 660 AM).

All fans in attendance will receive a Devils team calendar courtesy of Modell's Sporting Goods.
