Rangers 1, Devils 0 (F/OT)
New Jersey Devils 0, New York Rangers 1

Rod Pelley and the Devils' penalty killers kept New York 0-for-5 on the power play. (Dec. 9) –
After 60 minutes of scoreless hockey at Madison Square Garden, the Devils saw their winning streak come to an end in a New York minute.

Brendan Shanahan scored 30 seconds into overtime on the only shot of the extra session, as the Devils fell to the Rangers, 1-0, on Sunday night.

New Jersey's season-high nine-game winning streak came to an end 22 days after it began; the Devils had not dropped a game since losing to the New York Islanders, 1-0, on Nov. 16 at Prudential Center.

Martin Brodeur (14-10-2) made 28 saves in his 12th straight start, and saw his personal win streak snapped at nine. Named the game's Third Star, Brodeur suffered his first defeat since posting career victory No. 500 against the Flyers on Nov. 17.

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner did what he could on a night in which the Devils' offense was unable to get much generated.

After outscoring opponents 31-14 over their previous nine games, New Jersey managed only 17 shots against Henrik Lundqvist through three periods, and did not record a shot in overtime.

Four Rangers registered three or more shots in the contest, while Zach Parise was the only Devil with as many as three.

The Devils rebounded from a first period in which they were outshot 12-4 by putting nine shots on Lundqvist in the middle frame to the Rangers' seven. New York finished with the overall edge in shots, 29-17.

New Jersey went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the penalty kill continued to excel with a 5-for-5 performance against the league's 13th-ranked power play on home ice.

The Devils' PK held off a Rangers power play with under five minutes left in regulation, and has now allowed only three goals on its opponents' last 41 chances with the man advantage (92.7%).

The clubs traded six-second man advantages in the first period.

Sheldon Brookbank was whistled for delay of game at 2:10 after putting a clearing pass into the crowd. Just six seconds into the ensuing Rangers power play, New York's Brandon Dubinsky was called for interference.

The Devils had a handful of first-period scoring chances, the first of which came just 12 seconds into the game off the stick of Parise.

Later, John Madden had a chance to make it 1-0 with less than eight minutes left in the opening frame.

Dainius Zubrus was called for diving on a Michal Rozsival hooking penalty, creating a 4-on-4 for two minutes at 11:46 of the first.

Madden collected a Fedor Tyutin miscue at the New York blueline and skated in on a breakaway attempt that was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist at 7:34.

Madden added another scoring chance six minutes into the third period, when a Jaromir Jagr pass skipped over the stick of Marc Staal at the Rangers' point. The Devils' centerman beat Staal to the puck down the right wing, and muscled his way to the front of the Rangers net for an attempt that was thwarted by Lundqvist.

The Devils remain 0-for-New York with a combined 0-4-3 mark against the Rangers and Islanders... Jay Pandolfo missed his fifth straight game with a groin injury... Mike Rupp returned to the lineup for the first time since New Jersey's last visit to the Garden on Nov. 14, and drew a penalty with an aggressive forecheck against Paul Mara at 14:37 of the second period... Johnny Oduya and Vitaly Vishnevski were scratched as the Devils went with six defensemen.

The Devils' three-game road trip continues Monday night in Washington, and concludes Thursday in Boston.
