Arron Asham and the Devils won the physical battles all night long at Prudential Center.

newjerseydevils.com (Jan. 4) –
With a flash of his catching glove, Martin Brodeur brought a sellout crowd of 17,625 to its feet.

Brodeur's save on Randy Jones with two minutes left in regulation was one of 36 on the night for the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, who led the Devils to a 3-0 blanking of the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center on Friday.

Fourteen of Brodeur's stops came in the third period, as he weathered a flurry to send the Devils to a 14-1-1 record in their last 16 against Philadelphia.

Brodeur posted career win No. 40 over the Flyers with his fourth shutout of the season, and 96th of his career. Last year's shutout king, Brodeur is now just seven shy of Terry Sawchuk's all-time mark of 103.

With his 21st win, Brodeur also tied Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff for second in the league, one behind San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov, who leads the NHL with 22.

Brodeur's 500th career victory on Nov. 17, which came against the Flyers, sparked a run that has seen the Devils' goaltender go 16-3-1 with four shutouts over his last 20 starts.

Paul Martin's first-period goal provided all the offense the Devils would need en route to their fourth win in a row over Philadelphia, which has dropped 11 straight in New Jersey.

Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac also scored as the Devils improved to 12-5 in Newark with their fourth consecutive victory on home ice.

New Jersey increased its Atlantic lead over second-place Pittsburgh to three points.

Martin notched his second of the season – and 100th career point – in style. The fourth-year defenseman stepped by Denis Tolpeko down the right boards, and curled his way to the front of the net where he beat Martin Biron at 9:41.

Zajac made it 2-0 with his sixth of the season, snapping an 11-game dry spell.

When Braydon Coburn fell inside the Philadelphia blueline, Zajac gathered the turnover and fired an unassisted goal by Biron's glove with 2:29 left in the first.

Elias netted his ninth of the season and third in four games with a power-play marker at 12:45 of the second period.

Elias ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that was batted down by traffic in front of the Flyers' net. The three-time 30-goal scorer followed up his own loose puck from the slot and put it by Biron for his third on the power play.

New Jersey finished 1-for-7 on the man advantage in a contest that featured 13 minor penalties. The Devils' penalty kill was a perfect 6-for-6 against the Flyers' third-ranked power play.

The two teams next meet on Jan. 22 in Philadelphia.
