Pittsburgh Penguins 3, New Jersey Devils 4

Parise's OT winner puts the Devils into a tie for the Atlantic top spot with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

newjerseydevils.com (Feb. 4) –
Down for much of the night, the Devils were never out.

Searching for their first home win of the season against Pittsburgh, the Devils scored twice in the third period to rally from a 3-1 deficit and top the Penguins 4-3 in overtime on Monday night.

David Clarkson tied the game with 8:39 left in regulation, and Zach Parise delivered the game winner 37 seconds into the extra session, as the Devils snapped a four-game home losing streak to the Penguins.

Patrik Elias recorded a goal and two assists, including the primary helper on Parise's clincher, and now has 10 points in his last six games (6g-4a).

Elias received a pass from Parise along the right boards and fired a shot on net from the top of the right circle. Parise batted the puck out of the air on his backhand for his 20th of the year, and fourth deciding goal.

Martin Brodeur made 31 saves for his 28th win of the season. With 522 career victories, the Devils' goaltender is 29 shy of Patrick Roy's all-time mark of 551.

The Devils (30-20-3) closed out a five-game homestand with back-to-back wins, and moved into a three-way tie with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia for the Atlantic Division lead.

The club now heads to Buffalo for a meeting with the Sabres on Wednesday night before returning to Newark for a four-game homestand beginning Friday against Anaheim.

After a scoreless first period, the Devils were outshot 14-8 in the second and fell behind 2-0.

Evgeni Malkin had burned New Jersey for six points in the first five games of the season series, and was a factor once again with two assists.

A Malkin rebound on the Penguins' third power play led to Ryan Malone's 15th of the season at 2:26. The Russian forward also set up Petr Sykora for Pittsburgh's first two-goal lead.

Malkin crisscrossed with Sykora just inside the Devils' blue line, dropping a pass that Sykora wristed from the top of the left circle. The shot redirected off the leg of Vitaly Vishnevksi and past Brodeur for Sykora's 17th at 11:50.

Jamie Langenbrunner broke through with 41.7 seconds left in the period to make it a 2-1 game heading into the third.

Parise took a Langenbrunner pass at the side of the goal and spun in front for a scoring chance that Ty Conklin stopped. Langenbrunner drove to the net for a backhand that beat Conklin to his stick side for his ninth of the season, and fourth on the man advantage.

Jordan Staal opened the scoring with a power-play marker in the third period to put the Devils down 3-1.

Brodeur was called for a tripping minor at 2:47 of the third, then nearly helped the Devils kill it off with a great save on Sykora. Malkin tapped a pass from the left side of the net to Sykora near the bottom of the right circle, and Brodeur slid to his left to deny the former Devil.

Pittsburgh connected moments later on a similar play, this time with Maxime Talbot passing from the side of the net to Staal, who beat Brodeur from the right circle for his seventh at 4:30.

But a fortunate bounce off of Pens' defenseman Kris Letang put the Devils back in it.

Elias put a fluttering shot from the bottom of the right circle toward the Penguins' goal that caromed off of Letang and past Conklin for his 16th of the year at 9:37.

Clarkson struck for his seventh at the 11:21 mark, beating Conklin on a backhander after the Pens' goalie had saved Johnny Oduya's shot from the point.

After being outshot 24-14 through the first 40 minutes, the Devils closed the gap with an even shot count of 10-10 over the final 20 and won for the sixth time this season (6-16-1) when trailing after two periods.

The Devils picked up their first home ice victory over the Penguins since Dec. 26, 2006.

Jay Pandolfo
came back to the lineup after missing 28 games with a groin injury sustained on Nov. 28. Pandolfo skated on a line with Clarkson and John Madden, and hit the ice for 17 shifts in the first two periods (12:50). He would take two more shifts early in the third period to finish with 13:20 of ice time, including 4:16 on the PK... Arron Asham, Sheldon Brookbank and Andy Greene were Monday's scratches.

Clarkson and Malone met up at the 15:41 mark of the first period. Each received five for fighting.
