A Run to Remember: 1988 Playoffs
History Links
After the Devils fell to the Bruins by a 6-1 count in Game 3 of the 1988 Wales finals, words were exchanged between Devils head coach Jim Schoenfeld and referee Don Koharski. The on-ice officials refused to participate in Game 4, forcing the off-ice officials into action. Paul McInnis, Vin Godleski and Jim Sullivan refereed the game, which the Devils won, 3-1, on May 8, 1988. Schoenfeld was suspended for one game, forcing President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello behind the bench for Game 5 in Boston.

The series would eventually go seven, with the Devils dropping the deciding game at the Boston Garden to fall one win shy of a trip to the 1988 Stanley Cup finals.
